  • World’s largest flower blooms in Niagara

    For the first time ever in Canada, the world’s largest flower opened up into bloom in Niagara Falls the first weekend in May. Since 1989, only 21 sightings of the giant, bell-shaped flower have been observed in greenhouses worldwide, making it one of the rarest flowers in the world. Advertising of the event on the web, and likely through brochure and flyer printing, encourages people to visit the greenhouse during the blooming period which began May 3rd.

  • Community sport participation study gets underway

    The Centre for Sport Capacity at Brock University in St. Catharines has received a $482,000 grant to headline a study to examine the capacity of sports organizations across Canada.

  • Leading-edge Niagara Tunnel to be completed in 2013

    The Ontario Power Generation company just announced that the massive $1.6 billion Niagara Tunnel project is expected to be operational by December, 2013. The project will provide electricity for 160,000 homes in Niagara, St. Catharines, and other parts of Ontario. It will be the third tunnel built under the City of Niagara Falls.

  • Ringo Starr kicks off tour in Niagara

    For the third time in a row, Ringo Starr and the All Starr Band will begin their summer tour with two shows at the Niagara Fallsview Casino on June 14th and 15th. Beatles fans from St Catharines will be interested in seeing Starr and may even catch a glimpse of him in the area as they are expected to be rehearsing here for several weeks prior to the show.

  • Shipping wine within Canada to be legalized

    A private member’s bill introduced by B.C. Conservative MP, Dan Albas, seeks to remove the barriers on transporting wine within Canada.

    It has been reported that local St. Catharines charities are having trouble making their quotas for the holidays. While demand for their services is up, donations are down. There are several local charities that need your help with donations of various items. Find some of them below.

  • Fergie Jenkins Museum opens in St. Catharines

    Ferguson “Fergie” Jenkins is one of Canada’s most well-known baseball players. He was born in Chatham, Ontario and played his baseball career in the United States. He has been honoured with a spot in the Baseball Hall of Fame, the Order of Canada and a Canadian stamp in his honour, among other things. He is a Canadian sports treasure.

  • Patient education booklets to be distributed

    The Niagara Health System, which posts daily updates on the current C Difficile outbreak in the Niagara Region, stated recently that there are currently four cases of the disease in the St. Catharine’s General Hospital. This has not risen from their last update.

  • James Street Night of Art in St. Catharines

    The 6th annual James Street Night of Art will take place on October 14; it is presented by the St. Catharines and Area Arts Council. James Street will be closed to traffic between St. Paul and King St. and local businesses in that area will host a variety of art-related events.

  • Public Art Policy in St. Catharines

    The City of St. Catharines developed a Public Art Policy to cover those works of art that appear in city buildings and in outdoor public spaces. There are over 2,000 art works on display throughout the city; these items can range from a sculpture to a painting to a poster. Companies in the area have most likely been responsible for some of the postcard or poster printing of the art works on display.
